Yussuf Mume Saleh's nightly mesmerizing ritual brings solace to the lovelorn in Harar.
I met Mr. Yussuf as a child growing up in Harar and the memories of his nightly ritual never left my mind.Through his ritual, he gave us the chance to contemplate what it means to witness such an intimate and beautiful connection between man and so-called wild beasts. I wanted to share those mesmerizing images that were forever imprinted in my memory. I wanted to capture that ritual in the dizzying way that I remember it because he's one of those last guardians of pretty much dying tradition.
