This One Weird Trick

Joanie Wind
United States, 2020, 6 min.

In English.
Includes adult language.

A woman slogs through an identity mired with gendered stereotypes and consumer capitalism to attempt to discover her true self. What is "natural" or "original" becomes inaccessible, forgotten, and nonexistent.

Director's Statement

For this film, I was trying to capture a feeling of separateness or estrangement from one's own body. So much of our experience of life itself is dependent upon our physical bodies: how we are gendered, our physical ability, how we are perceived by others, our features and skin color, etc. In the film, the narrator explores her own body dysmorphia and wonders if there is an original version of herself that is untouched by society and culture.

Category: Experimental, Festival Alum.
